Catalina lived in a village near the Sierra Madre mountains. She was a midwife and healer, raised by her abuela who taught her the ways of plants, prayers, and protection. People came to Catalina for everything from childbirth to curses, but they never invited her to weddings or their village feasts. They feared what they didn’t understand. Catalina was in love with a man named Emiliano. He was a farmer with the best eyes and laugh she says. They were set to be married in spring. But as the time came closer Emiliano disappeared. Days later she found him in another village married to the daughter of a wealthy landowner. He’d traded love for status. When she returned home she burned what would've been her wedding dress. The flames turned black as she whispered to the shadows, listening to old spirits buried in the land that were never to be called upon. Within months she was a new women. Someone tried to confront her, they choked on air and bled from the eyes. She became dark and evil now working amongst the dead. Her death remains unknown.
